I went to the Metropolitan Washington D.C. Chapter of the National Congress of Black Women’s “11th Annual Shirley Chisholm Trailblazers Awards Luncheon” at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, DC. In addition to all of Shirley Chisholm’s accomplishments, she was the first National Chair and a founding member of the National Congress of Black Women.
The guests included the current President & CEO of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. (NCBW), Dr. E. Faye Williams, the Chair of the Metropolitan D.C. Chapter, Johnnie Scott Rice along with other officers from the Metropolitan Chapter, D.C., former U.S. Congresswoman Donna Edwards who is currently running for P.G. County Executive, Miss Teen District of Columbia, presidents and CEOs of local organizations, and a host of local politicians.
The 2018 honorees were as follows:
Michelle D. Bernard, a lawyer, author, independent political analyst who has appeared regularly on Al Jazeera’s “The Third Rail,” HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher;” “All In with Chris Hayes,” “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and TV One’s “News One Now” with Roland Martin and many other television shows. She is also the president & CEO of the Bernard Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy.
Gloria Ward-Ravenell, the First Vice-Chair, of NCBW’s Metropolitan Washington D.C. Chapter. She also serves on the board for Children of Mine Youth Center and Supporting Our Sisters International, Inc. She is the Director of Fundraising and Political Advocacy for Supporting Our Sisters International, Inc.
Barbara A. Sanders, a long-time member of NCBW and former East Coast Representative for Motown Records. She is the former owner of record store, Yogi Records and current owner of Second Affair, a consignment shop.
Ronald Troy Smith, the Assistant Office Manager for the national chapter of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. He provides substantial assistance to the organization. He is also the Chief Operating Officer for Natural Health Options.
The event was delightful. The weather was lovely, albeit windy, and everyone seemed to enjoy the food, entertainment and each other’s company. Please see my video clip of the afternoon’s event below.
