I attended a “Member Appreciation March Mingle” event for “F-I-T Life” in Laurel, a dance fitness Meetup group that I recently joined. I was curious after reading the first paragraph about their group – “F-I-T Life is a place where committed like-minded women come together to improve our health and wellness as well as enjoy each other’s company. F-I-T Studio is the space where we meet on a regular basis to sweat, laugh, and support each other in our transformational journey.”[i] To me, that sounded like the perfect prescription for my physical and mental well-being, and I decided to take a leap of faith.
It had been years since I had taken a fitness class with folks other than my colleagues. After I had registered for my first event with F-I-T Life, I felt re-energized; I was getting back to my old self again, and it felt great!
As the date of my first class with F-I-T Life loomed, so did my insecurities thrusting self-doubt theories to the forefront of my mind. “Am I going to be the oldest person in the class? Suppose everyone is very fit and I can’t keep up. How can you take a Zumba fitness class when you don’t even know Zumba?” Those uncertainties somehow darkened the glimmer of confidence that existed when I first registered. The frustration from the drive home from work during rush hour and my nerves resulted in a big ole cancellation of my first event.
I could not be defeated by my insecurities, so, I registered, and apprehensively, went to the following Saturday’s class. Upon arriving at the studio’s location, I noticed a couple of women heading towards the class, nothing unusual stood out. I walked in and Denny, the coordinator/instructor cordially greeted me. She was friendly and very personable. While completing the required paper work and conversing with Denny, my nerves, subconsciously, vanished. Denny introduced me to the group and then it was game on. I took my first Zumba class, and I loved it! It was exhilarating and everything I never expected. I’m not going to go into details about my Zumba class because I will do a post on it later. However, I will say that I sweated profusely and met several friendly and supportive women.
I was unruffled attending the March Mingle because I was somewhat familiar with the kind of people motivated by Denny’s energy. For the Member Appreciation March Mingle, Denny had prepared a lot of delicious, homemade hors d’oeuvres, foods, and deserts. The crowd consisted of members who had been with Denny for over 10 years and newer members like myself, but everybody was sociable. The setting provided a great opportunity for me to get acquainted with the women from my Saturday’s class, as well as, meet other members.
Life is full of uncertainties. Although some outcomes may not be positive, an attempt beats a defeatist attitude every time. I am thrilled that I attended that Saturday Zumba class. If not, I would have never found a community that makes me feel like I belong. It feels great to take a gamble and the odds work in your favor! Sometimes it feels great just to take a gamble. If you know of other great Meetups in the DMV, please share with others in the comments section.
Peace and Blessings,
