I went to the National Congress of Black Women’s 32nd Annual Awards Brunch. It was held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at the National Harbor in Maryland. The annual brunch is a major fundraising event; a delightful gathering wherein the Honorees are acknowledged with awards for their works in their respective communities.
Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq., is the National President and CEO of National Congress of Black Women, Inc. (NCBW), a non-profit organization dedicated to the educational, political and cultural development of African American women and youth.”
The award recipients this year were:
Valerie Daniels-Carter, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of V&J Holding Companies, Inc., one of the largest women-owned food service franchise operations in the U.S.
Frankie Muse Freeman, Civil Rights Attorney, who in 2007 was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, GA.
Valarie Long, International Executive Vice President of the Service Employees International Union.
The West Point 16 – In 2012, the U.S. Military Academy received 15,171 applications for admission. They accepted 1,193 applicants and only 191 of that 1,193 were women. On May 27, 2016, 16 of the 191 female cadets graduated as second lieutenants in the U.S. Armed Services. They are known as the West Point “Proud” 16.
Anita Hill, Attorney and Academic, better known for testifying during the confirmation hearings for Justice Clarence Thomas.
There was one youth honoree named Kennedie Dupar, who at nine years old is an award winning gymnast.
The two male honorees this year were Michael Baisden, a well-respected radio talk show host and Thomas Mikal Ford, better known as Tommy from the “Martin Lawrence Show.”
